.45 S&W/”Revolver Ball” Hollow Base Conicals

$37.50

This listing is for 1 box of 50ea .45 S&W/ .45 “Revolver Ball” hollow base conicals.

FOR REVOLVERS ONLY, the nose of these bullets is not flat enough to be safe in a tubular magazine.

These .452″ bullets are cast on a custom mold by Brooks Tru Bore in 1:20 alloy and weigh nominally 230gr.
These projectiles are an exact reproduction of an original in my personal collection, which was withdrawn from a cartridge manufactured at Frankford Arsenal in 1887.

The “.45 Revolver Ball” cartridge was adopted by the US Army in 1874, as a solution to the logistics issue created by the simultaneous usage of .45 Colt Single Action Army revolvers and .45 Smith & Wesson revolvers. While they shared a common bore diameter, the Colt cylinder and cartridge were longer and thus Colt pattern ammunition could not be used in Smith & Wesson revolvers. A common cartridge was thus required, with the length of the case and the powder charge reduced (from 40gr to 30gr). The M1874 version of this cartridge was Benet Primed, and in 1882 it was updated to Boxer priming and continued in service for the remainder of the the Army’s usage of revolvers in this chambering.

This reproduction is suitable for loading in .45 Smith & Wesson brass to recreate the 1882 version of the “.45 Revolver Ball” cartridge, for use in either .45 Colt or Smith & Wesson revolvers. It is intended for black powder propellant, however suitable black powder substitutes will function correctly also. Smokeless powder is not recommended! This bullet is cast in soft alloy, and is meant to expand into the rifling in travel down the bore. Use of smokeless powder may result in velocity that is too high for the bullet to function correctly, and lead fouling in the bore. This was a subsonic loading in service, and should remain so in reproduction.
